French Indochina 1937 Silver 10 Cent Piece

This coin is in great shape – I would grade it EF40 or higher. Many of the coins minted in French Indochina immediately before the Vietnam war saw very intense circulation in a tropical environment, so it’s not common to find high-end examples.

The obverse shows very classical portrayal of Liberty siting on a throne with her shoulders square on to the viewer and her legs turned away from her body to her right. She wears a crown with radiates (reminiscent of the divine crowns on late Roman coins), and holds a fasces in her lap with her right arm (the Fasces is a symbol of authority given by the senate in Rome). 2 boat anchors are visible under and behind the throne. The legend runs from 8:00 to 4:00 and reads “Republique Fancaise”. The date is at 6:00.
